Union City is installing a new pedestrian crosswalk on Alvarado-Niles Road
Union City was awarded Federal Highway Safety Improvement Program funding for pedestrian safety improvements along Alvarado-Niles Road between Decoto Road and Mann Avenue.
In addition to the new beacon system for pedestrians (called a HAWK system), a critical part of the project will be installation of a median barrier fence to prevent mid-block crossings. Jaywalking at this area is extremely dangerous.
How does it work?
For motorists approaching the crossing, the HAWK system consists of a Red-Yellow-Red vehicle signals. When drivers see a flashing or steady yellow light, they'll know to stop for pedestrians.
For pedestrians, the HAWK system will include push buttons and pedestrian signal indications similar to those at typical intersections.
