Republic Services (dumpsters) and Tri-CED Community Recycling (carts) are Union City's exclusive franchised haulers. If you need to garbage, recycling or organics collection service, please call Republic Services at 510-657-3500 to set-up an account. Recycling rates are 50% of the solid waste rates, and thanks to single stream recycling, all recyclables go in the same container, eliminating sorting. Restaurants and other generators of food scraps can also take advantage of discounted rates by participating in the Food Scrap Recycling for Business Program.

Mandatory Recycling: California AB341 and Local Requirements
Alameda County Waste Management Authority Ordinance 2012-01requires businesses generating four or more cubic yards of solid waste per week and all multi-family property owners (five units or more) to obtain a level of recycling service adequate for the amount of recyclables they generate. This local ordinance builds upon a California State law, AB 341, which requires the same commercial and multi-family accounts to have recycling services.
The local ordinance specifies what materials are to be recycled, including corrugated cardboard, newspaper, mixed recyclable paper, recyclable food and beverage glass containers, metal food and beverage cans and #1 and #2 plastic bottles. Those who self-haul loads of discards to local waste facilities are also required to separate the specified recyclables. Under the Alameda County Waste Management Authority ordinance, fines will be issued to businesses and multi-family properties not in compliance.
