Union City’s Public Works Department runs an urban forestry program to protect the City’s trees and encourage installation of more trees. Tree planting offers many benefits and is a valuable investment in the city’s public spaces.
The goal of the City's Urban Forestry Program is to encourage an attractive and healthy urban forest to benefit the community. Among the many benefits trees provide:
- One acre of trees produces enough oxygen for 18 people every day.
- A single large tree can release up to 400 gallons of water into the atmosphere each day.
- Mature trees improve our aesthetic environment, absorb noise, are traffic calming, reduce stress and crime, and create a peaceful place to relax or socialize.
- Trees improve property values. The addition of trees and shrubs can increase property values by 10 - 20%.
